A Long Overdue Rethink of Constituent Services

We have the best job in the country. Every day, we get to meet amazing Americans at their front doors. We listen to their concerns and work hard to resolve them. We’re that helping hand even the most self-reliant person needs every now and then. It’s such an honor for us to support the elected leaders, who care the most about the communities they serve.
We have an opportunity to build lasting, positive relationships with the residents we serve. How do we do this? By reaching out, meeting them where they are.
Pretty much everyone has concerns. But not everyone knows who to reach out to or how. Traditional constituent services is mostly limited to staff answering the phone in a legislators office or attending community events and town halls. This works, but when you’re standing at a constituent’s door, talking to them in person, you get a whole different perspective.
This is the new world. We canvass neighborhoods and meet the residents. We’re kind and caring and curious and we display the wonderful behaviors that we all loved growing up but seem to have left our society. While we may not be able to resolve every issue perfectly, we’re going to do our best and we’re going to communicate well about it and in our experience, constituents really appreciate the effort.

We accomplish our mission by canvassing residents’ homes, meeting them where they are, and having great conversations on their doorstep.

We approach our jobs with a servant’s heart. We practice empathy and compassion. We listen actively and re-state the citizen’s concerns, in order to make sure we’ve heard them correctly.

We take pride in going the extra mile, doing kind things that people used to do in America to care for each other.

We follow up and treat every open citizen concern as though it were our own.

We represent every elected official well by looking and acting professional.
